In a closely contested game, Springfield defeated McDonald by a score of 1-0, in eight innings, to secure a tie for the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Championship.
Through seven innings, Springfield pitcher Jacqueline Kish was locked up in a pitcher’s duel with Rachel Ward from McDonald, and after seven innings the game was scoreless. In the top of the eighth, Springfield’s Marlie Applegarth smacked a double and the next batter, Cassie Bacon, hit another double, driving in Applegarth for the only run of the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Kish was able to shut down McDonald to preserve the win.
Kish scattered six hits, struck out five and walked one. For McDonald, Ward also allowed only six hits, struck out twelve and walked two.
Second baseman Makenzy Capouellez led Springfield’s offense with a pair of singles. Capouellez also made several stellar plays in the field, two of which were diving catches that kept McDonald from scoring. Mya Duskey hit a double and Jacqueline Kish hit a single.
For McDonald, Megan Ward hit a triple and a single. Hannah Donkers, Sierra Schneider, Sarah Lorello and Carley Titus hit singles.
With the win, Springfield improved their record to 17-3 on the season and 12-2 in the conference.
